The appointment of Hina Rabbani Khar, 34 as the foreign minister may have raised some eyebrows in the establishment, but the way that the mother of 2 has captured the imagination of the Indian nation vindicates her choice as the face of Pakistan.

The interest that she has generated in the Indian media raised the concerns of seasoned Indian social commentator who called her “Pakistan’s new WMD” who could put India’s 79 year old SM Krishna at a disadvantage. While also noting that even the Delhi sky was drooling over the new minister (A reference to the wet weather Delhi at the day of her arrival)

The Telegraph added that “In the unkind world of adjectives, the odds are stacked against SMK and in favor of HRK.” Hina indeed adds poise and glamour to a post that has been traditionally been reserved for more seasoned of the lot.

Indian news papers and tabloids which rarely bestow much attention to Pakistani foreign ministers devoted sizable portions in the paper to Khar’s taste in accessories be it her 1.7 million rupee Birkin bag, her classic pearl jewellery or her oversized sunglasses, the price tag on which was estimated to be in millions.

If one is to look beyond all the glamor and poise though, the appointment of  Ms. Khar marks a paradigm shift in our relations where the new generation which accounts for the majority of the populations In the two countries dictate where the relations should be heading, as the young minister noted: “an uninterrupted, constructive and positive dialogue process was integral to resolve all outstanding issues and normalize relations between Pakistan and India”
